This week I have received many emails calling for new legislation and a greater commitment from Government to preserve our food standards. I fully recognise the value of the UK’s food standards. On the Island, our award-winning local producers represent some of the best Britain has to offer. You are right to call for an explicit commitment to uphold our food standards in future trade deals.
Personally, I believe that we should always seek to buy local and support our local producers and shops that sell local food and drink. We have some 45 food firms on the Island who produce or grow award-winning cheeses, meats, breads, vegetables beers, wines, spirits and jams and ice creams, etc. To find out more, go to: http://letsbuylocal.org.uk
I would like to state again that food standards will continue to be regulated by the Food Standards Agency and Food Standards Scotland. These agencies are independent, non-ministerial bodies. The Government is also establishing a Trade and Agriculture Commission. It will engage closely with the agriculture industry to help shape trade policy. It will be independently chaired by Tim Smith, a food safety expert and former Chief Executive of the Food Standards Agency.
Overall, I am confident in Ministers’ assurances that our food standards will not be compromised. I will continue to speak up for high-quality British producers, such as those on the Island, and promote our rural economy.
