Island MP Bob Seely has objected to ‘harmful’ plans to build houses on greenfield land in Seaview.
Mr Seely said the plans by Eton College for nine homes on rural land behind Solent View Road - known locally as the Donkey Field - were unnecessary, unwanted and unsuitable.
The developers have already caused local uproar when they controversially cut down a 150-year-old oak tree on the site – an action Mr Seely said he was appalled at.
In his objections to the plans, Mr Seely said he opposed the development on the grounds that it would be environmentally and aesthetically harmful, the access roads were unsuitable and there was no clear need for the homes.
He said: “This is yet another example of a low-density, car-dependent development which has been put forward by landowners who have shown a depressing disregard for the community in this area and the environment.
“The access roads are narrow and unsuitable, and the homes planned will go nowhere towards addressing Isle of Wight housing need. Not one of them will meet the criteria as affordable.
“Furthermore, the site has not been identified for development in either the Nettlestone and Seaview Parish Plan or the draft Island Plan, so development in this location is not needed and also not welcome.”
Mr Seely has also objected to plans to build eight houses on land adjoining the Donkey Field.
