Bob Seely has welcomed news that plans for a new Newport Football Club stadium - and also the new retail park that will finance it - are moving forward.
The club is currently playing at East Cowes Vics while the St George’s Park owners and Newport FC benefactors South Coast Leisure (SCL) has been putting in place plans for both linked schemes.
Now, having negotiated local planning requirements, the pandemic and subsequent economic challenges, South Coast Leisure has told Bob it is hopeful the schemes will begin this year.
Bob said: “I have spoken to Newport FC supporters and directors and I know how keen they are to see this project progress.
“I also know the club has welcomed the considerable support South Coast Leisure has provided while the issues around the new ground and the retail park are overcome.
“I’ve been told that, subject to final financial agreements, both projects could get underway this year. This is great news for Newport FC and its supporters and also the wider sporting community who will also be able to use these fantastic new facilities at The Racecourse.
“I have told SCL I would be happy to do anything I can to help see this development start as soon as possible. I know the developers want to get cracking and I know that Newport FC need their new ground."
Bob sought an update from SCL after speaking to Newport FC supporters, most recently at the IW Gold Cup final.
“As someone who loves sport, I’m delighted that the new ground will open up a lot of year-round recreational opportunities for local people,” he said.
“I'm also pleased SCL is making progress to deliver a new sports facility and also the retail park that will create many local jobs.”
