Women's Rights

Thank you for contacting me regarding women's rights and your concerns that they are being eroded.

The Government is committed to protecting women's rights and freedoms and has made a number of provisions to protect them. This includes the recognition of the importance of the protection of single-sex spaces, as provided for in the Equality Act. This Act makes it clear that providers have the right to restrict the use of spaces on the basis of sex, and exclude transgender people, with or without a Gender Recognition Certificate, if this is justified. I can assure you that this position has remained unchanged since 2010, and the Government believes it continues to strike the right balance.

Further, I am aware that in 2019 the Government Equalities Office published their 'roadmap' on gender equality which committed the Government to conduct research into what works to improve women's reproductive health across the life course, and from this develop indicators relating to women's health experience and the impact this has on their work. Further, the Women’s Health Strategy sets out new approaches to address deep-rooted and systemic issues in the health and wellbeing of women. This follows a call for evidence launched by the Government which received nearly 100,000 responses from across the country.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me.
